Stay Away August 5, 2010 Jonathan Lewis (brooklyn, new york United States) I purchased this printer November 2009 for my kids to use. Out of the box the black ink did not print at all. I called customer service and after running various cleaning programs they agreed that it was broken and sent me a new machine. Eight months later I have the exact same problem. Again after calling customer service and running various fixes they are sending me a new refurbished machine. Good customer service. Bad product.
Horrible Printer May 11, 2010 Jennifer L. Minich (South Bend, Indiana) This printer would be great, IF it actually worked! We bought this last summer, it printed fine for about a month, and then it stopped grabbing paper. It takes 10-20 tries to print 1 page of a document!
After spending weeks on the phone with the service department, we were finally able to return the printer to Brother to get a replacement; the new one is even worse. It didn't even work for a week before refusing to grab paper.
We are not heavy printers - maybe 10-40 pages total/month. A brand new printer should not fail so quickly. We are very disappointed and will never buy a Brother printer again!
Great Wireless Printer/Scanner January 10, 2010 nguida (Chicago, IL USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This wireless printer/scanner has been great for me. It looks good, it was easy to set up, and its smaller size is perfect for the cubby I wanted to fit it into. I'm a little tight for space around my computer area, so I'm thrilled with the wireless capabilities which were not very difficult to set up. It prints and scans quickly with great quality and is simple to use.
My one gripe is that getting a good scan can be difficult sometimes, as the scanner doesn't pick up the full area of the glass. This probably is fine for standard printed documents which have margins anyway, but it is difficult to scan in full-page material; I have to offset it from the edge of the glass, which can make it challenging to keep the page aligned properly.
Oh Brother December 7, 2009 J. Park (PA, USA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This printer worked well for the 3.5 months it lasted, having been bought new from Amazon on 11 Aug 2009. On December 1, 2009, the black ink would no longer print. I replaced the ink cartridge (which are nicely priced if generic) and ran the self-cleaning cycle over five times--still no black. I figured that the printing head must have been clogged. Since it was only 3.5 months old, I decided to call Brother because this printer is "backed by a one-year warranty." Their service technician told me that the only thing they would do is send me a refurbished unit to replace my new one. I asked why I should receive a refurbished unit when the one I bought was virtually brand new and he told me that's all they would offer "at this time."
I will avoid purchasing Brother printers in the future. Don't count on their help if anything goes wrong with the machine.
Additionally, the print quality of this machine is rather dull, HP printers seem to print much brighter, attractive pictures when compared to this DCP-585CW printer. The scanner on the machine works well, and is quite fast so that is a plus.

On my 2nd machine and it just broke November 25, 2009 River Maiden 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this printer for my home office. The first printer I got was a bad egg right from the start. It couldn't print black ink. Brother was nice enough to replace it for free and so I got a new one. Setting up the first printer was fine, but the second one wouldn't link with my wireless network properly. I could scan and send the image to my computer but I couldn't print from my computer. Brother's technical support helped me set it up but I don't think anyone outside of a computer expert could have figured out how to do what they instructed me to do.
Finally I got the second printer up and running. I've printed a handful of pages off of it and then today it says there is a paper jam. I remove the jammed paper, but the warning is still on. When I restart the machine it just flashes orange. Hopefully tech support will be able to help me out again.
When the machine does work, it works well. Overall quality is good and print speed is about what you'd expect for this type of machine. The scan quality is also good and it gives you a variety of choices for scanning like scan to file, scan to email, etc... There is some delay when a job is sent to the machine and it doesn't hold very much paper, but other than that it works well. It even has an envelope tray. I like the size of the machine too especially for a 2 in 1.
If this printer didn't have the technical problems, I'd give it 5 stars, but since I keep having problems with the machine it gets 3 stars.
